Chapter Seven

Time for an Apology

The Miller Ranch

Four Days Later

Adam set aside the hammer he was using to claw up the last of the old stairs leading to the porch. He was dead tired, but not from overwork on his part. He’d not had a solid night’s sleep since Reverend and Missus Parker’s anniversary shindig.

No doubt Milly was angry with him, as she should be. After his discussion with her grandfather, he’d taken the coward’s way out and snuck away without bothering to say ‘goodbye.’

Ashamed of his behavior, he’d skipped services on Sunday, and holed up inside the ranch house all day Monday and Tuesday making minor repairs to the walls and floors. However, with both his hired men away for the day, he had no choice but to drag his sorry behind outside and get some work done.

The reverend seemed to think that Milly had a crush on the man she believed Adam Miller to be. She had no idea the background the two of them shared, nor did her grandfather want her to know. ‘It’s better you show no interest in her,’ Reverend Parker had said. ‘Rather than she finds out about your connection to her father.’

It wasn’t as if he’d caused her father’s death… at least not directly. Even inadvertently, it was another reason he had no business making friends or… as was happening… fall for another woman who would, undoubtedly, leave him when she knew the truth.

Yet, despite his best intentions, Milly Parker was hard to resist. Every time she threw out a Latin name for one of the local plants, she impressed him. When she prodded him for information that he was reluctant to reveal, she amused him. The way she felt in his arms when they danced was enough to drive him crazy. From the top of her honey-blonde head to her cornflower blue eyes, to the trim frame inside her riding trousers and flannel shirt, she enthralled him. Dressed up in a fancy party gown, she bewitched him and made his heart pound faster than a racehorse on a flat piece of land.

Walking out on her this past weekend had been the hardest thing he’d done in years… maybe ever. Still, the reverend had a point. No sense letting her get close, knowing she might find out the truth. The idea of her hating him would surely add to the long list of heartbreaks he’d already endured.

It was best to just let her be. She would be leaving soon anyway. There was no reason to start something they couldn’t finish.

His self-pity party was interrupted by the sound of an approaching horse. Maybe Jake had changed his mind about taking the day off and returned looking for extra work. Adam laid down the hammer and stood. Turning toward the road, he raised his hand to shade his eyes from the late morning sun.

Milly was coming up the long roadway. He closed the distance between the porch and the end of the lane in a few long strides, arriving just as she drew her horse to a halt.
